Black Ribbon Day in Ottawa is part of a National Day of Remembrance in Canada to mark the anniversary of the infamous 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany that directly led to the occupation of most of Central and Eastern Europe, Finland and the Baltic States and the slaughter and oppression of tens of millions.

It is coordinated by the Central and Eastern European Council of Canada in collaboration with the Belarusian, Czech, Estonian, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Slovak and Ukrainian communities.

As we mark this day we should also remember the men, women and children in Ukraine, North Korea, Syria, Iraq, Africa and other parts of the world who continue to face violence and repression from totalitarian regimes and dehumanizing ideologies.
