Talk and Slide Show on Trekking the Silk Road and China’s Rise

Join author, adventurer and son of an Estonian refuge, Eric Enno Tamm for a talk and slide show about his latest book, “The Horse That Leaps through Clouds: A Tale of Espionage, the Silk Road and the Rise of Modern China.” He’ll be giving a fascinating talk and vivid slide show with photographs, maps and charts about how he retraced the epic journey of a Russian spy, Gustaf Mannerheim, who trekked from St. Petersburg to Beijing a century ago along the Silk Road.
Questions and discussion with the audience will follow and signed books will be available for purchase.

1. Emadepäeva jumalateenistus toimub laupäeval, 10. mail kell 3 peale lõunat (15:00) Martin Lutheri (Saksa) kirikus, 499 Preston Street (Prestoni ja Carlingu nurgal). Jutluse peab õpetaja Kalle Kadakas Torontost. Orelil teenib hr. Dietrich Kiesewalter. Vahetult teenistusele järgneb kiriku saalis emade austamine. Palume lahkelt kõiki emasid ja lapsi osalema! Pärast teenistust naudime kohvi, teed või limonaadi ja laulame päevakohaseid laule. Kaasa võib kutsuda nii sõpru kui ka tuttavaid! Nagu ikka nii ka seekord on osalejate panus einelauale väga teretulnud.
2. MES koostöös OES-ga korraldavad 31. mail Lättemäel talgud, et koristada ja valmistada ette koht jaanipäevaks! Kõik abikäed on oodatud!
3. 1. aprillist on avatud tänavune Välisministeeriumi Eestit tutvustav viktoriin. Palume ka seekord, et saadaksite teavet viktoriini toimumisest oma välisriikide sõpradele ja kolleegidele. Auhinnad on osalemist väärt! Viktoriini tutvustamiseks võib kasutada allpool olevat e-kaarti. Viktoriin asub aadressil http://quiz.mfa.ee/ ja on avatud 1. aprillist – 31. maini. Annual General meeting

The Annual General Meeting of the Ottawa Estonian Society will be held on Saturday January 26th. We will meet at the Latvian Church, 83 Main Street at 3 p.m. We plan to give an overview of our activities in 2007, followed by a showing of the Estonian film classic “Mehed ei nuta” (Men Don’t Cry) with snacks and coffee.We hope that all members, and those that would like to become members, will be able to attend and to discuss future activities for 2008. Your help in bringing potluck snacks along would be much appreciated!

“Mehed ei nuta” (Estonian for “Men don’t cry”) is an Estonian movie released in 1968, directed by Sulev Nõmmik and written by himself and Enn Vetemaa. A group of people suffering from sleeplessness are, under the guise of a resort, moved to a peninsula and subjected to work therapy. When they realise the deception, they attempt to leave the fake resort, with hilarious consequences.
